A statue of China's first Olympian -- sprinter Liu Changchun -- was unveiled on August

Those who attended the ceremony included: Wen Shizhen, DUT alumnus and Vice Chairman of the Financial and Economic Affairs Committee of the Eleventh National People's Congress; Leaders of Dalian Municipal City Zhang Chengyin, Xia Deren, Huai Zhongmin, Li Jingrui, Yao Jiakai, Shi Zhongyan, Zhu Chengqing; retired leaders of Dalian Municipal City Yu Xuexiang, Li Yongjin, Lin Qingmin; Lin Anxi, President of China Business Executives Academy Dalian; DUT President Ou Jinping; Liu Changchun’s sons Liu Hongliang and Liu Hongtu; Wang Xingdong, members of CPPCC and famous play writer. The ceremony was hosted by Dalian Vice Mayor Zhu Chengqing.

The Dalian city government funded the commissioning of the statue. "Today we set up the bronze statue of Mr Liu in the Dalian Olympic Square, for the purpose of passing Liu's patriotic, unflinching and go-ahead spirit," said Dalian mayor Xia Deren at the unveiling ceremony.

"I am very excited today," said his son Liu Hongtu at the ceremony. "The completion of the statue is not only a representation of the respect and love of the Dalian people for my father, but also a promotion of the Olympic spirit."

The 3.8-meter-high bronze statue depicts Liu running. It was designed and carved by teachers from DUT. Engraved on the foundation were the Chinese characters meaning "China first Olympic person Liu Changchun."
