On August 31st, Liu Yandong, Member of Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and the State Councilor, came to inspect Dalian University of Technology (DUT). Some important leaders accompanied the inspection including: Vice-minister of Education Yuan Guiren, Vice-minister of Science and Technology Li Xueyong, Governor of Liaoning Province Chen Zhenggao, Vice-governor Lu Xin, Dalian Party Secretary Zhang Chengyin, Mayor of Dalian Xia Deren, Deputy mayor Xiao Shengfeng, Zhu Chengqing and so on. DUT leaders also escorted the inspection, like Party Secretary Zhang Dexiang, President Ou Jinping, President Lin Anxi of China Business Executives Academy Dalian, Vice Party Secretary Kong Xianjing, Vice Presidents Xue Guang, Guo Dongming, Zou jiyan, Lu Zhongchang, Li Zhiyi, and President Assistant Li Junjie.
Liu Yandong first visited the State Key Laboratory of Coastal and Offshore Engineering. Prof. Wang Yongxue, the dean of the laboratory introduced the laboratory construction and the contributions their scientific and technological talents had made for the important ports and offshore engineering construction in China.
Before she left the laboratory, Liu Yandong expressed her hopes for the school leaders that DUT should focus on innovation because in the next 12 years, higher education will certainly have a great leap in quality and feature. DUT should stand out from so many universities of technology with its distinctive features, just like Beijing Olympics with its unique features and high levels. She also said that in the next decade, there will be more world-class quality universities in China and what DUT should do is to get rid of the superficial things and train more talents for national development, make contributions for scientific and technological self-innovation and better and faster development of economic society.
Then Liu Yandong and her company came to the School of Innovation Experiment. The assistant dean Prof. Feng Lin reported the development situation of the department to leaders of the inspection group. Zhang Dexiang and Ou Jinping also briefly introduced measures of how the school provide financial aid to help students to innovate experiments and foster their innavation concepts and notions. Liu Yandong fully confirmed these effective measures and stressed that we should do more to strengthen students’ hands-on ability. Afterwards, she came to inspect some of the experiments the students were doing. Though it was weekends, many students were still at work, attentively doing experiments. She encouraged them to overcome more research projects.
The one-hour inspection was soon over. Liu Yandong and other leaders left the school in the mizzle. Before she left, she expressed again her wishes for DUT leaders to achieve more results and develop more innovative talents for the construction of innovative country.
